...as a kid I loved to joke around. I also loved to laugh. I remember a friend of mine, Sean, he was the funniest kid I knew back in my London Primary school days. Sean had a natural funny bone. I wanted to be just like him! So, whenever the opportunity arose, I was there; pulling faces, making jokes, and impersonating the local cat! I always wondered whether Sean would do the same stuff...
That funniness stuck with me when I moved to Wroclaw, Poland. But it was more of a case of trying to fit in with the Polish mentality. I mean, getting told off for trying on gloves in a store? Sheesh! Anyway, the years went by, and I slowly was able to call the capital city of Lower Silesia my home. I made friends, and it was with these individuals my comedy remained afloat. I noticed they were quite the serious bunch...not me! I was comfortable being the ... er... jester? Yeah, that's right - the jester's pinky toe ;-)
On September 12th 2010 I began my stand up comedy journey. It was the first of seven classes during a course at the renowned The Comedy School in Camden, London. On October 23rd 2010 I successfully completed it. The course ended with a showcase at The Pirate Castle, Camden - London. It took me a few months before actually booking my first official gig (not counting the showcase). It was at a marvellous venue - The Savoy Tup, London. It was my debut! And what a wonderful gig it was. People laughed at comedy! It was also part of the Laughing Horse New act of the Year 2011 competition. Although, the politics were against me that evening, and I failed to progress to the quarter finals, I had done it – my stand-up comedy days were truly up and running. In February 2011 I had a total of 5 gigs in London. It was looking bright, indeed. At the time I had no idea I would have to wait until December 2011 to experience the thrills of telling laughies in the spotlight again!
Polish Kabarety (read this like this; Ka as in Cabbage, ba as in bang, re as in ... as a Scot would roll the "r" and then re as in rembrandt, and "ty" as in...er...well, the "y" has to be said like an "i" as in tin...so ty as in ti...n, put that all together, and what do you get? gaschmoogle, right? Yeah...[officer dibble sigh])...anyway, where was I? Oh yeah,...Polish kabarety (cabaret groups) sit proudly upon the comedy throne in Poland. Stand-Up Comedy is present but it is but a gift beneath a crusty mistletoe (the kisses long gone). I was walking the streets of Wroclaw in the fall of 2011 wondering how to arrange some open mics for meself, where to go? The reality was that there was nowhere to go. Nobody was organising such events. The English language factor made it all the more impossible. That was it! Impossible! Wherever Batman is, there is Robin, wherever Scooby is there is Shaggy, and wherever Impossible is there is a MISSION! I was on a mission to be the funny guy with the English Stand Up comedy Open Mics in Wroclaw...
One problem...how to arrange all of this?
Following months of puffs and huffs the walls came down and a group of galant performers took to the stage of Klub Niskie Laki in Wroclaw on December 10th 2011!!!
MORE TO FOLLOW SOON...
